Multi-objective Optimisation Framework for Assessment of Trade-Offs between Benefits and Co-benefits of Nature-based Solutions

Abstract Urbanization and climate change are producing an escalation in the prevalence of urban problems, particularly those connected to flooding, prompting authorities stakeholders recognize need for sustainable solutions. Nature-Based Solutions progressively replacing traditional engineering solutions as alternative since they more eco-friendly. By re-activating hydrological cycle processes, NBS intends increase natural water storage capacity help decrease flooding. The work described here outlines a framework optimising efficacy flood risk reduction its co-benefits, well defining trade-offs among these co-benefits. integrates 1D hydrodynamic models with multi-objective optimisation techniques. To demonstrate applicability methods it has been used Sint Maarten, which is island located Caribbean Sea. Four measure were identified having good potential be applied case study, namely: green roof, permeable pavement, bio-retention pond, open detention basin. results showed that developed ability represent link between benefits costs when evaluating various NBS, hence aiding decision-making process select implement NBS.
